Wooden Spoon is the children’s charity of rugby and was formed in 1983 after five England supporters returned from Dublin having watched England play there. The charity has grown over the years and now supports disabled and disadvantaged children all over the UK all through the power of rugby.
The charity is split into regions with every penny raised in the region, spent in the region. In Gloucestershire, the small committee have raised over £500,000 for good causes in Gloucestershire and more recently have supported charities such as The Chamwell Centre, Music Works and also has underpinned the brilliant Mixed Ability Rugby initiative which has been rolled out throughout the county.
Fund raising events that have been supported by many of you over the years form the backbone of the effort but of course the last 12 months has seen all of that disappear as COVID has prevented any live events taking place.
The biggest event in the Gloucestershire calendar takes place at the world famous Cheltenham festival where each year over 300 guests enjoy hospitality at an off-course experience and at the same time supporting Wooden Spoon. This year, the charity is unable to hold this due to COVID restrictions so to try and ensure they can still fund raise, Aitch and Aitch Bee events have designed a brilliant online auction which will run through “Race Week” with all profits donated to Wooden Spoon.
